A visit to a traditional home is an invitation to learn from a host. Every household is different, and the best guide to what is welcome is the person who has opened their door.

Follow your host’s lead

Ask before photographing people or private spaces. Take your shoes off if your host asks, and let them explain the meaning of the objects and colours around you rather than assuming.

Coffee may be part of a warm welcome. Accepting a cup can be a lovely way to share a moment, but there is no need to rush: conversation is part of the experience.
